Daily Tech News & Insights, Every Weekday.

Good morning, folks! ☀️

Today, we’ve got China finding creative ways around chip sanctions, Huawei dominating their home foldable market, and Samsung's European pricing revealed.

Meanwhile, there's discussion about underutilized chips and new consumer incentives in China.

Here's what you'll find in today's tech roundup:

Read on for all the details!

Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) lithography is a critical technology for manufacturing semiconductor chips smaller than 7 nanometers. For years, Dutch company ASML has maintained a global monopoly on EUV machines using the laser-produced plasma (LPP) method.

However, since 2019, US-led sanctions have barred ASML from selling advanced EUV equipment to China, tightening restrictions further in 2024 to include EUV masks, etching machines, and other components.

Chinese scientists are now pioneering alternative methods to bypass these sanctions.

IDC has released a new market survey revealing that China’s foldable phone market experienced both growth and challenges in 2024.

Huawei, which launched foldable phones such as the Mate X6 and Mate XT Ultimate in 2024, currently leads the foldable phone market in China. Huawei maintained its dominance with nearly 50 percent of the market share, followed by Honor at 20.6 percent and Vivo at 11.1 percent, supported by strong product lineups like the X Fold 3 series.

Samsung is just two days away from unveiling its 2025 flagships, the Galaxy S25 series. There isn’t much we don’t already know—design, specs, and more. However, the exact pricing of the upcoming phones still remains uncertain.

According to information shared by an anonymous source with Gizmochina, we now have the pricing details for the Galaxy S25 series in the European market. Documents we have received suggest that the base Galaxy S25 with 128GB of storage will start at €909.

Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 7 Plus Gen 3 processor back in March 2024. It’s built on the advanced TSMC 4nm process and packs features that rival premium SoCs from one or two years ago. Yet, despite its impressive potential, we’ve barely seen the SoC in action.

So far, only two devices—the Realme GT 6T and OnePlus Nord 4—have been launched with this chipset. For a chip that delivers more than we could ask for in a mid-range phone, its limited adoption feels like a missed opportunity.

China has announced a new subsidy scheme to encourage consumer purchases of digital products, including smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches.

The subsidy will be effective starting January 20th, 2025. This initiative aims to make these digital products more affordable for consumers. Under the program, eligible products priced below 6,000 yuan ($820) will receive a one-time subsidy covering 15% of the product’s sales price after the retailer’s discount.
